I was surprised to learn that L. Frank Baum, who wrote the Wizard of Oz, was a Theosophist, and the Wizard of Oz expressed his Theosophical perspective. It is a classic hero's journey, the kind of journey that we may have in our dreams and that Joseph Campbell wrote about. It symbolizes a spiritual journey through a portal to an astral plane and back again. It is a transformational journey, in which the hero, Dorothy, attains self-realization. She discovers her own personal power. On December 31, 2009, On Point on WBUR did a fascinating program on the subject of L. Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz. You can listen to it online at Frank Baum's Oz. Check it out.

I've seen bio movies about him, wouldn't you know they left out the theosophy, they just said he loved making up stories for his kids. Thanks for finding that Deerheart!
