I was actually taught that the exact French translation of your Descartes quote was "I am thinking therefore I exist." One of the biggest misinterpretations in western philosophy. As you can see this leads to a different discussion. Semantics is an amazing thing. As a reductionist, all he knew was because he was able to think in that one moment, he knew he existed in that one moment...
